So you want to be a… prosumer

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

A book I read lately (Against the machine: being human in the age of the electronic mob, by Lee Siegel) introduced me to the concept of “prosumer” — a person who creates and consumes at the same time. He rightly critiques this trend, especially where it comes to the internet (read an interview here), but I find that some of the things I’m interested in, that have let me have an “in” to the market as a designer, have made me a prosumer as well.

Consider Etsy, Threadless, and my new love, Spoonflower (I’ve intentionally linked to content related to me). All of these sites offer content that the site owners have not created, and which they do not pay for. Users create content, and upload it to the site. This content is then offered for sale to other users.

At this point, the sites listed above differ — Etsy charges a per-item listing fee, and a percentage is taken by Etsy and PayPal from every sale, but the shop owner gets most of the money. On Threadless, in order for one user-designer’s work to be turned into a T-shirt, it must receive enough votes from other user-designers. If it does, the designer is paid $2000+. On Spoonflower, the designer receives 10% of the cost of yardage sold. Contest winners earn store credit.

I love being able to share my designs and crafts with the world via the internet, without having to create or purchase my own shopping cart system, silkscreens, digital fabric printer, t-shirt blanks, or do much marketing (though marketing on my own definitely helps). But I am now more aware of the economics involved in these transactions.

Every time you comment on a blog, write a blog post, review your Amazon.com purchase, or critique something on Yelp, you are being a prosumer too.

Today I worked to configure a new feature — PHPList. It is a mailing list system. I would like to send out a newsletter occasionally, offering a discount in my Etsy shop, notes on what I’m up to lately, and other goodies. I’m not sure yet how often it will go out — so don’t worry that I’ll be filling up your in-box completely!

Click here for the sign-up form.

And bear with me… I’m new at news!

Alphabet Applique Quilt Tutorial

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Stay tuned for pictures and more complete instructions.  Steps so far:

Audition fonts and choose the font (I chose one similar to Futura).

Figure out the block dimensions.  To end up with a toddler-bed quilt size I chose a finished alphabet block size of 5.25″ x 8.25″.  I will have 30 blocks: the English alphabet plus 4 animals.

Print the letters out on scratch paper so they will fit comfortably on a square.  (more…)

Updated!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

So, I finally updated my WordPress version. The CSS has been updated but it’s not the fanciest… a fresher look is in the works.

Edit: Well, it’s updated… everything except the Gallery section.  Probably more general tweaking to come as well!

Tutorial: Three-dimensional Letters

Monday, November 30th, 2009

On a trip to a store I hadn’t visited before, filled with all sorts of decorative goodies, I was tempted to buy the letter “K” to put in Kalena’s room. Then I thought, “I can probably do this” and proceeded to figure it out. After a couple of days mulling it over, I decided to do this project.

After I started working on it, I decided to make this tutorial. So, not all of the steps have pictures, but I will try to make it all clear. I would say this is a medium-level project. It took me about ten hours (over two days) to make all 6 letters.

Items you will need:

  • Cereal boxes, cards from shirts, or other lightweight cardboard
  • Various fabrics (quilting cotton is a good weight)
  • Lightweight batting or felt (I used polyester quilt batting)
  • Glue and tape (I used Sobo, methyl cellulose, and Scotch tape)
  • Scissors, box cutter, cutting mat and metal-edged ruler
  • Curved sewing needle and thread

1. Audition your fonts.

You will want a sans serif font, most likely. You will probably not have a good result if you choose something really fancy. Compare the letters below.

The first is a good choice. It has a solid shape, distinct edges, and not a lot of curves. The second has skinny serifs as well as a thin line forming the top diagonal part of the letter. The third has far too many curves, as well as parts that are not connected.
