Howdy!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Today I edited this site’s front page, adding links to Facebook and Ravelry. I realized I hadn’t updated my Ravelry queue in a while — so I did that too. I’m currently working on the scarf seen above. It’s about 6 inches wide, and will eventually be about twice as long as it is now. It’s a pretty easy pattern, and it’s helping me become an expert in kfb (a method of increasing stitches, by knitting into the same stitch twice).

Since I last posted, my daughter Kalena celebrated her first birthday! We had a very nice time in a local park.

Coming up in July, I’ll be attending my 20th high school reunion. I’m leaving my daughter overnight for the first time! I can’t believe it’s taken more than a year for this to happen, but in truth I haven’t had any compelling reason to travel anywhere yet this year. I look forward to the trip, but I know I’ll miss her and my husband.

Also since I posted last, the summer issue of Knitcircus Magazine has gone live! We also recently launched the Pattern Shop — now you can purchase selected individual patterns after the issue is retired.

Ginga Squid Cowl

Cowl with hand-spun yarn -- Ginga Squid

I found this blog — currently featuring lots of chunky and gorgeous handspun yarns — through my husband Erik.

He was reading boingboing.net and generally complaining about being bored. Meanwhile I was trying to get some spinning in before Kalena woke! She’s very interested in the spinning wheel lately — I think she likes my rainbow-colored drive band.

Anyway, seeing these yarns makes me yearn for a spinning wheel that can handle thicker yarns.  The orifice on my wheel is just tiny.  I love the peach/pink/orange combo as well.

New Rubber Stamp

HaleyStudio.com Rubber Stamp

I decided it would be nice to give people information about their purchase on their sales slip.  I had some old address labels that would work, but they just said my name instead of my business name.  So I decided to carve a stamp.  It’s nice having lots of different hobbies… there are always lots of tools and supplies around when I feel the urge to pick something up again.

Scarf coming… eventually!

I got my Phat Fiber box, and I’ve spun up most of the roving and batts that were included!  You can see nearly everything I got here on my Flickr site.

I took most of the fibers and spun them into this yarn:

Eventually I will wash this yarn and knit it into a skinny scarf so it will look like swatches of lots of different yarns together.

Newly embellished slippers

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

My husband Erik gave me these slippers several years ago.   They were quite plain, and I would regularly threaten to add sequins.  A year or so I actually did add sequins, which were sewn on top of a felted wool base.  Finally, the thread holding the sequins on just didn’t hold anymore, and they started falling off.  So I decided to create a new design, this time without sequins.  I am very pleased with the result.

New Gallery section launched!

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

I recently installed Gallery2 and have been adding pictures and customizing the look.  I just made the link live today — click on “gallery” here or in the header!  It’s still a work in progress — I know I need to add more descriptions, better titles, etc, but I really wanted to ditch my old, non-dynamic, table-based format, and I think Gallery2 does a pretty good job.

My birthday present

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Today’s my birthday, and I got to open a present from my mother-in-law.  It’s this gorgeous pendant from Jen Maestre!  I really enjoy it.  Jen works with colored pencils and does amazing things with them.

Fabric Tags

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Well, I finally decided to purchase some fabric tags to up the “Branding” aspect of Haley Studio.

And I love them!  They will appear on the newest batch of Cat Head Dolls, matzo covers, and other sewn items.  I think they’d be too large for the Pocket Lovecats though — I don’t want them to look overwhelming.  Click for a larger look.

How to make a bulletin board

Monday, April 7th, 2008

As promised, here’s how to make a bulletin board.

Materials:

  • 1 or more pieces of Homasote (a recycled paper pulp board available at larger hardware stores)
  • fabric larger than the Homasote
  • scissors to cut fabric
  • thin Dacron padding (optional)

lamp that knits its own shade

Monday, March 24th, 2008

LJ’s JWZ (always good for interesting links) pointed me to this one:

Nadine Sterk, Sleeping Beauty, 2006, Design Academy Eindhoven, Atelier.

“A lamp that develops like a living organism: switch it on and it slowly starts growing by knitting its own lampshade at a speed of three rotations per hour.”
